Pre Fabricated Homes  from Luxurious to Fabulous Mini homes

by Katalin Szubota

So what makes a pre-fab home green you ask? Lets first explore the different types of prefabricated building techniques which will help you decide which style you prefer and what fits your budget.

Web definitions

  1. Prefabricated homes, often referred to as prefab homes, are dwellings manufactured off-site in advance, usually in standard sections that can be easily shipped and assembled. Some current prefab home designs include architectural details inspired by postmodernism or futurist architecture.

Environmental Benefits of Prefabrication:  They include minimized waste, reduced construction timelines, limited exposure to the elements, fixed cost, streamlined skilled labour, and limited site impact: Building in a centralized location allows for the utilization of leftover construction materials while a focus on employing all materials results in overall waste diversion up to 85 percent.

Types of pre-fab techniques:

ModularModular: It’s like big boxes put together and set with cranes onto site. It’s very predictable, and more environmental than conventional site building.

SIPSPanalized Building /SIPS (structural insulated panels) Whether you’re searching for green building products or just want to save money, structural insulated panels provide the answers you need for energy-efficient, easy construction that cuts utility bills every month.  SIPs work in walls and roofs for new construction and additions, on foundations ranging from poured concrete to blocks and insulated concrete forms.

Steel Frame & Insulated Panels: Virtually is indestructible, renewable and recyclable.  Steel framed buildings, manufactured using  5-Star Steel Frame System, can be produced very quickly and constructed using modular, prefab, build-on-site or transportable methods enabling construction flexibility for lower overheads, quicker manufacturing.

AdvFrameTechniqueAdvanced Framing Techniques: Using less wood, careful details, pre-cutting and panelizing some portions of the building are great way to build green homes.

Here are a few examples of how builders of pre-fab homes build their green homes.

Programmable Thermostats – Sleek, Smart & Sexy

Every home should have one.

Who knew programmable thermostats can be so sexy, smart and energy efficient. We spend at least half of our energy bill on heating and cooling.  We can monitor and reduce our energy to conserve as much as possible and match our decor style at the same time through these programable thermostats.  I picked these three because they represent, in my opinion, three different interior styles and all are smart and efficient. No matter what your style, you should incorporate a programable thermostat in your home and start saving 20-30% of your heating and cooling costs.

The Nest is for the techy, minimalist decor.  It was designed by a team of Apple and other Silicon Valley veterans (Credit: Nest)

The EcoBee is more of the traditional, simple, easy to read style.

The Honeywell is for the Martha Stewart crowd that likes to accessorize with color.

Check these out and see which one works for your style.

# 1  Nest – The learning thermostat

Nest-ThermostatThe demand for energy varies over the course of a day and a month.  We all have different habits and adjust the thermostat accordingly and hopefully remember to turn it off when we leave home, but wouldn’t it be nice if you have a thermostat that learns your habits and adjusts to your comfort zones.   Nest learns your schedule, programs itself and can be controlled from your smart phone or your laptop. Teach it well and Nest can lower your heating and cooling bills up to 20%.  Three out of four people install the nest themselves in 30 minutes or less.  You can also get installation from a local. Nest Certified Professional.

#2  Ecobee – Simple yet really smart

Screen-Shot-2012-07-21-at-11.23.56-PMThis WiFi-enabled ecobee Smart Thermostat takes the frustration our of programming your thermostat with a simple touch screen and easy to follow step-by-step Instructions.  Their scientifically proven algorithms take into account elements such as weather, size of home, number of occupants and type of HVAC system to maximize your energy efficiency.  You can even accessorize it with fun GelaSkin for home or business.

#3 Honeywell – Wall color matching

honeywell-wifi-stat4Honeywell’s Prestige 2.0 Comfort System can change the color display to match you home’s decor.  It’s an interview -based programming and connects to the internet, displays outdoor conditions and offer portable comfort control.  Allows separate programming for each day of the week.  It automatically adjusts your home’s temperature when utility prices are at their highest.  The all in one control – controls temperature and Indoor Air Quality such as humidification, dehumidication and air filtration all from a single control in the living spaces.
